Overview
Established in 1817, the Presidency University Kolkata is a state institution that has been recognized by the UGC as an Institution of National Eminence. It was formerly known as Hindoo College, but in 1857 it changed its name to College of the Bengal Presidency and joined Calcutta University. The institution was founded as a university in July 2010 after serving for more than a century as a prominent constituent college of Calcutta University. It is accredited by the NAAC with an "A" grade and acknowledged by the UGC.
The university offers UG, PG, and PhD programs in arts and science specializations through its 17 departments. Every year, admission to all of the courses the university offers is determined by entry. PUBDET and PUMDET, the entrance tests held by WBJEEB for admission to UG and PG institutions, are, however, canceled for the academic year 2021–2022. Merit in the most recent qualifying exam will be the basis for all admissions for this academic year.
